Sunday, 28 February 2010

THE END OF THE SHOOTING IS OVER with 6mins to go

We have finished filming the movie so we need to sort out some of the music and sound effects also tweak a few bits where have a 70mins rough cut done by midnight and then where edit a 70 min version for screening on the 20th March in London NYC and LA we still need to ad credits and get contracts signed by all the main crew who made the movie before a distribution deal
wish we could of had more time i think we could of had a 90min feature but all the shooting is done so we can say whe shot the whole movie in 28 days , as it could be a selling point , could get to the ICA to collect films but the ICA logged all the films in before close , some of the films where under 70- mins which was fine as i said at least you got the movie finished , but the rule was 70 mins but the most important part of the whole challenge wasnt just about the 28 days it was about making a movie in one month , at least 10 teams dropped out 5 didnt even pay but just as well they all pulled out before the start , but even if we get only 5 or 6 featue films its still amazing
im more than happy for all the teams , shame i wasnt in comperition i would of loved to of entered maybe next time , we just did it for fun on a budget of less than £200 and a load of blagging and borrowing of peoples time and effort , we at least have something made in one month from the random theme title and story which we almost stuck to ? our movie is the office meets living in oblivion , a mocumentary on the making of a sci fi b movie blockbuster
it was fun making it and hell getting it together but its there its almost a movie !!
see you all soon for the screening everyone has been waiting for
WHEN LONDON SLEPT IT CAME ALIVE

Saturday, 27 February 2010

last day of shooting OMG one day to go !!!

The following weeks have been unreal i was on a bus that crashed i use my friends office and
we have over 30 extras on set running though london screaming while being chased by a 3 ft robot ? also been working with an amazing group of people with no egos just the love to make movies , and the challenge has produced over 6 or 7 feature films in 28 days which is wild
we have loads of editing to complete tonight and tomo so poor gary is going to be up late
for the sake of everyones efforts , his an amzing guy who idd work with again if he ever needed me on one of his projects , we have pulled in so many fav's and begged borrowed and haft-inched
equipment cameras vehicles but without everyones help we wouldn't of got this far to many people to thank now ,but we have just one more day to go !!! and it will just be the start of promoting and uploading everyones feature films for the judges
excited just wanna see what the other teams have done , its not about if they made a great film
they made a feature film no more shorts ofter this for them
it just shows with teamwork anything is possible

UPDATE FROM OTHER TEAMS part 2

Hey Johnnie,

Thanks for the email.

We're buried in the post and racing toward the deadline at tremendous speed.

The film is looking amazing though...

It's a mad David Lynch, Kubrick, Von Trier inspired Horror Thriller with an Altman ensemble cast.

One of my co-producers has been talking the project up around town and we're starting to get some proper distribution interest already, which is really exciting considering we shot the film for next to nothing - literally hard drives, catering, parking fines and some props were the only expenses...

For a taster here's the opening title sequence where you can also see your name in dramatic flashing lights under the co-producer heading:

I had a couple of questions as we get ready to deliver on Sunday...

The first is simply that we're over-length by a couple of minutes (7 or so) and we've hacked out everything that could go to this point but to lose anything else would actually be detrimental to the film... I've called a crew meeting and shown them the film, everyone is in agreement that this is the best version so please, please, please can we submit it at our length? If not let me know and I can have a lay in on Sunday coz I'm shattered.

I also noticed one of your criteria for entry is non-copywritten music - I direct music videos most of the time and have had some tracks donated by bands that I work with regularly. I've got clearance paper-work sorted but again I just wanted to double-check eligibility with you.

Here's a couple of behind the scenes snaps...

Thanks again for the kick up the ass - I've been bitching and moaning about not being able to get funding for a feature for about 2 years and now I've shot one and it's a fucking amazing feeling, especially when it's come out this well...

Best,

Shane

Nearly there! Hopefully finish up on Saturday and then drop off the dvd. It's been a mad few weeks with over 27 actors, 12 locations and to give it that global feel we've set scenes in Beijing and USA, the China scenes being shot in Mandarin Chinese...

So, back to the edit and on with the special fx, grade and sound mix. That's about it...

Hi Johnnie

With regards to Dripping With Sweat team, we have sweated quite a bit this month! but sadly we will not be able to submit a feature film before the deadline.

We are still carrying on with filming our story, and hope to submit a decent 3min trailer for the ICA show, if this is still cool. The upshot is that we aim to carry on with the project independently of the challenge and hope to eventually cut together a "long short"

The reasons we could not finish are:

- Took too long to write the story
- Took too long to cast
- Sporadic availability of cast and locations
- Over ambitious / wordy script led to 6 hour shoots resulting in 6 minutes of usable editied footage
- Lack of directorial experience with camera setups led to 6 hour shoots resulting in 6 minutes of footage that actually cut together ok
- Lack of crew / contacts. My own credits so far comprise of writer, director, editor, SFX, casting, location manager, DP, sound, prop buyer, set dresser, costume dept, grip, driver, runner and animal wrangler (goldfish)

So there are the excuses! im sure other teams will find them familiar.

On a personal note, i do not regard this as a failure. As an aspiring film maker i could not have hoped for anything better than this challenge as a reason to get my hands dirty and get stuck in, and along the way to learn new things every day and to get better at this stuff. I aim to continue. Roll on your challenges sir, they provide the spark to get dreamer film makers out of the pub and onto the set. This was our rehearsal for the next one.

Your project is grand and worthy of merit. Maybe roll out a small de brief documentary about it, with interviews of the teams, those who made it and those who didnt, expressing their own trials and tribulations and experiences, clips of their films, BTS, commentaries. Its kind of like the Gumball/ Dakar Rally but films instead of cars, i know i would watch it!

all the best and see you at the ICA

hey jonny
unfortunately our production ran into more problems than expected. we almost ended up having to pay £1700 a day :-S anyway, i am unfortunately emailing you to say that we will not be able to submit a feature by the required date. we are working on a short with the crew we had but i know this is not what you were looking for. we all decided that it would be best to own up and say we couldn't do it, rather than try and cheat you by filling the production with dull, lifeless scenes. if you want the short as a warm up i will happily send you a copy on monday, if not no problem. i wish you all the luck with your future ventures and hope that next time our paths cross i can present you with something that both of us are happy with.

show details 24 Feb (2 days ago)

We had a bit of a catastrophic faliure, and lost our final cut, but
we've put it all back together and are just getting ready for a sound
mix tomorrow, before rushing the cut down to London over the
weekend...

We have a fair bit of behind-the-scenes footage that needs to be
edited to something comprehensible, and should have a trailer by
Friday if all goes well.

Hope all is well with you and your movie,

Hi Johnnie,

Things are going well (we are in editing hell, however) for team Gaffa Cake!

Having spent the first 2 weeks of the challenge honing and writing our idea. Plus prepping and getting a cast together, we finally got filming under way on the 15th for a 7 day solid stint. Was a great week with some great performances from our cast and Zombie extras!

At the moment we have a dark character driven zombie film set some time in the near future! The edit is slowly coming together but myself and Adrian (Who I'm making the film with) are now prepared not to sleep till Sunday!

Here's a still from our film.

feedback from challenger Gareth

Just a quick message, today we had to pull the plug on getting the film complete for the competition. Absolutely gutted to be doing it after so many peoples hard work and effort over the past month. We had some great fun, but after looking at the state of things today I decided to call time on it.

Our biggest problem was enough footage. We could either have really stretched it out and made it completely horrific and destroying peoples careers before they had begun or use enough good footage to make a very good 15min short, so we decided the latter was the better option and therefore giving us more time to edit it right.

This is my first attempt in getting together something this big, but a fantastic/stressful/fun/painfull/most enjoyable working experience of my life! Good luck to the others with the competition. And see you next year.

Best wishes

Gareth

UPDATE FROM OTHER TEAMS

FEEDBACK FROM TEAMS:
Hey, it has been a crazy time making this film.
The team has consisted of myself and Sarah Sellar, we have shot it, written it, directed it, edited it and even stepped in front of the camera at various points. The camera we used is a basic Panasonic NVGS250 with a cheap stereo mike plugged in to it, not the ideal tech but all we had access to.
We were blessed with a cast member who was not only the king of improv but also able to hook us up with the rest of our cast.
We kept it simple, glad of the genre of spoof, as it allowed us to make it very silly and use the cheapness of it all as the theme. Think old 50s sci fi, Earth Vs Flying Saucers, old Dr Who for your cues and you will have an idea of the style.
Shooting started on the 8th and went well as we wrapped early or on time each day. The only major issue is that we shot in 4:3 and had to convert to 16:9, but this would not stop us as the story is the thing.
Post has gone OK, Sarah has been an absolute star, Colour Grading and adding VFX to several hundred shots in a little over a week.

The only point of contention has been music and sound, this will not be perfect as we have had trouble getting what we need musically, but the film is looking nice and is quite funny, in a bizarre and weird way.

We will also have to hand deliver the film as there is no way of getting it there postwise and still take advantage of our alotted making time, needless to say we will have something for you on Sunday, though it won't be perfect.

Let me know the exact location for delivery so we can hand it directly to you.

we start filming 1st scene in 9 hours 53 secs !!!

week one and we have got a complete movie on paper , we now have to get it shot over the next two weeks so we have a week to tweek it to finish end of feb !! poster is done here we are testing our 35mm adaptor for the sony xdcam HD camera , it looked good but upside down could be fun ? set to work tonight building the spaceship for the opening scenes for green screen
just my luck could only find army jeep green ? not good bit its a start , we start filming our sfx and green scene stuff sunday 7th nov in beckenham kent , me ed gary and pete went though the whole film step by step today and got the whole movie down to 76mins on paper so where almost there now its getting it from paper to screen , we have some amazing scenes to shoot 50ft robots london being blo*n up and other mad stuff also loads of costumes and models , we just need some actors now left it till the last min but where be ok i think ?
got to make a things to do and shooting list for tomo and equipment list ?
its going to be wild next week have jeeps trucks army rockets to shoot will be great

PRE PRODUCTION DAY 6

Day 6 and its pre production day for us , today we have to sort out what where going to shoot and how where going to shoot it tomo , ed is our model maker and animator and set builder
whos exp is this is amazing , he will be elling us what he has and how we can shoot our actors infront of the green screen or what are our actors looking at on the big screen and whats the set ups going to be as we have a small studio to work in maybe we will shoot stuff outdoors need to find a field somewhere ? pete is my 1st ad and 2nd unit director as we will need 2 units shooting at the same time to even get close to getting enough footage for a 70 min feature film which people would watch so where going though the whole film today and makingit even more simple to get done , gary cgi and avid editor camera man is up for anything he is one of those wonderful people who help you rather than tell you what they want to shoot and it ends up not what you wanted we work great as a team , dom our dop and 2nd camera man is setting up some other locations today and will take stills for us to show everyone behind the scenes
tomo we have to try to get as much cgi stuff done with the actors as possible as next week will be full on balls out shoot with an army of extras and stuff , emma is our costume dept and poster artist like nick who helped gary design the poster for the moive , she will be sorting out the poster for the movie , also got to link up with andy from cannes in a van about this years trip there to screen the winning feature film and zombie shorts from last years even
ok got to take props to studio

feedback from one of our teams ?

Hello Johnnie,

I don't know if you want feedback emailed to you but I thought you might be interested in our teams progress.

We have a small team Slade (video editor), Alex (Cameraman) and myself (editor). We have been balancing real work and the 28 days later challenge.

I put an advert out for actors and got a great response. We have cast our two leads. They both very talented at improvisation which is vital.

We have arranged to first days shooting on Sunday. It's has been difficult with no money but we're getting there. We had to pay for a some props and a dolly but we should bring the whole days shooting under 200 pounds.

We have decided to film a simple story primarily set in one room with two actors set over 60 minutes. We feel this approach gives us a realist chance of finishing by the end of the month. The problem now is to make this simple set up exciting and not to much like a stage play! I'm hoping tight parameters will help us focus the story but I'm drawing a blank at the moment.

It has been good fun putting this together but the scale of the task is daunting. I'm determined to hand something in even if that means filming my cat for 70 minutes while listing to rights free music.

Looking forward to the end of the month.

Lawrence

dream cars looking for movie car

Went to dreamcars in redhill today to look at some movie cars
they are amazing but way to nice for our b movie
today we have been designing the movie poster for the junkets for the movie
also behind the scenes stuff , ed is working on the minitures for the movie
i got hold of some green screen and some sci fi costumes yesterday
just got to collect some more tomo at the costume shop in lee london called harlquin
also got to meet andy cannes in a van to sort out screening in cannes for winning film for the challenge , working on finding acotrs for sats photo shoot and filming on sunday , how do you find actors in less than 2 days ?

Tuesday, 2 February 2010

day 2 : we have a better story than monday

Ed and me had a good idea but it was to complicated , was feeling a bit pants all day and not thinking it would ever happen with our idea so i called gary and pete to meet me in a small pub in beckenham to brianstorm a better idea which we could explain to everyone , so pete me a gary had the task to make the brief as easy as we could get it so it could be made and not left on a pad with big ideas , i had make a feature film back in 2003 called dark hunter(imdb) which was based on spinal tap meets blair witch style comedy horror , it worked and we get distubution with play.com so the format must of worked , plus gary had made a sppof zombie trailer undead union which you can find on youtube gary scullion , so we thought we know how to make spoof horrors but not b movie spoof horror without the joke being over in 10 mins and just filling up the remaining time no , it has to be as close to the brief as possible without changing it to much the story is the same as the brief and the title so we will keep to it like all the other 20 teams signed up to the challenge, our idea is to make the movie in three stages and make it simple to shoot and edit as quick as possible
also get our other team members doing something cgi and titles as well and stuff
we need to find some studio space over the next few days if possible and other locations we now have to cast for our main actors and extras who also have parts in the movie our crew is small but our friends are many , if i can blag a jumbo 747 theirs nothing i cant do
day 2 was great we now have a movie to shoot and 27 days to do it

Monday, 1 February 2010

day one of the movie 27 days to go !!

Me Dom gary and Ed meet up in a cafe in beckenham , we went over the whole story and it kept changing form simple to extreme , we must remember its a b movie and not a epic but its hard to make it simple when you have a room full of creative people
so we wrote up a great idea but it turned into a documentry style movie which we cant really do from the theme and title and story , so where have to re think the whole idea and try to make it simple again 27 days to go and where no better off than when we started !! the story we got we have to go with to a degree
how strange things happen an old friend i meet in the cannes film festival kill bill party in 2005 who was making a pirates movie contacted me about lending me his new RED camera for some of the shoot and his xdcam or P2 man now ive got all the gear no ideas
having another production meeting tomo will try to get the idea in the bag , what we have got to do is write a list of props locations we can get hold of and go from there
when i made my 1st feature film i wrote in what i had avalible to be a landrover and a gorrilla costume and a forrest in bromley !! and two actors who where perfect for the part as documentry directors in the movie ,i had my movie i then wrote the script in 9 hours and used it as the shooting script which i used as a template
for the movie and shot it in sequence over four weekends due to time frame
so ill try to do it again on this movie but make it more simple story 1st
the rest will follow i hope , got to make it simple and edit in camera style or edit same day after the shoot to save time , 27 days is not as long as you think when
people work all day plus your asking for everyones help for free
shooting at night and weekends is all we have got , got to get the story and schedule done tomo whatever it takes or we will be pushing it to shoot anything this weekend

Sunday, 31 January 2010
